Slurping Encouraged: Where to find Ramen in Connecticut

2/23/18 - By Julia Tolstrup

It's a well-known fact around here that Ramen fixes everything. Not feeling well? Ramen. Had a rough week? Ramen. Tired of the cold, gray skies of winter? Ramen. Trying to solve the Reimann Hypothesis? Ramen. OK. You get the point. Any excuse for Ramen is a good excuse. And luckily, because this delicious noodle bowl has seen a sharp spike in well-deserved popularity, a serving is never too far off no matter where you are in Connecticut. So whether you're new to Ramen or a tried and true noodle aficionado, read on for some of Connecticut's best noodle houses. And remember, slurping is encouraged.

Mecha
The old adage goes, write what you know. Since Mecha is our go-to for a Ramen fix, it's a good place to start. There are three locations, Norwalk, Fairfield, and New Haven, and each brings to the table the same quality and overall goodness as its sister sites. And why stop with just the noodle soup? We like to whet our appetites with an order of pork belly Bao before tucking into a bowl of Tonkatsu Ramen. Did I mention we aren't vegetarians? But if you are, that's fine too. There are lots of meat-free options on the menu.

Kawa Ni
Here's the thing about Kawa Ni. It's tiny. Like, really, really tiny. But oh boy is it good. Owner Bill Taibe is something of a restaurant legend in Fairfield county with other offerings in Westport The Whelk and the recently opened Jessup Hall. Around here Kawa Ni is more a date night thing than a family dinner out thing, but I have seen kids eating there and no one seemed particularly offended. You know your kiddos best. If they can chill in a smallish, low key atmosphere for the duration of a delicious Ramen feast, then have at it!

Midnight Ramen
To be honest, I debated whether or not to include Midnight Ramen. As the name suggests, this very late night Ramen takes place Friday and Saturday nights at Anaya Sushi in New Haven. While it may not be exactly suited to little ones with bedtimes, it could definitely be a fun option for grown-ups with babysitters. I'm just saying.

Takumi Sushi Ramen & Lounge
If you're along the CT shoreline, why not check out Takumi for your Ramen fix. They've got all the standards, plus a full Japanese menu if there are (gasp) non-Ramen eaters in your group.

Fujiya Ramen
In Middletown, the answer to the question "where's the Ramen?!" is Fujiya. The restaurant features an extensive Ramen menu plus Japanese appetizers, soft drinks, and desserts.

Tiger Belly Ramen
I admit I absolutely love the name Tiger Belly. There's something just inherently lovely about it. This is Granby's answer to the Ramen craze and the reviews on Facebook give it an enthusiastic green light.

Ramen-Ya
This Berlin restaurant promises authentic Japanese flavor. They serve up Ramen, of course, as well as a Japanese menu. There is even a kids menu with decidedly not Japanese offerings for the pickier palate.
