2/19/14 - By Sasha Muzzarelli

It’s almost time to bid chilly, snowy February goodbye! Close out the month (and beat the winter doldrums) by taking in one of the awesome performances happening in Jersey this weekend, like The Little Mermaid at the Pax Amicus Castle Theater or The Peking Acrobats at NJPAC. There’s also plenty of hands-on educational events too – learn about old time customs at the Colonial Children’s Tea at Murray Farmhouse, get crafty with Totem Poles at Montclair Art Museum or get a sweet dose of syrup and its history at the Reeves-Reed Arboretum’s end of season Maple Sugar Fest. And remember, you can find a full list of weekend activities in our Event Calendar.

All Weekend

Colonial Children’s Tea (Middletown, NJ)
You’re invited to a colonial tea party inside the historic 1770’s Murray Farmhouse at Poricy Park. Kids ages 4 through 10 are invited with their parents to sample various refreshments and practice colonial manners! After your tea, enjoy the beautiful winter landscape and take a stroll around the park and farmhouse.

The Little Mermaid (Budd Lake, NJ)
Even if your little prince or princess has seen the movie version of The Little Mermaid dozens of times, there’s nothing like a live performance. Book your tickets and head to the enchanting Pax Amicus Castle on Budd Lake for a delightful matinee. You’ll join the Little Mermaid as she leaves her undersea home to visit the surface and find the prince of her dreams – that classic tale that we all know and love!

Saturday, February 22nd

Read & Explore: Fur, Feather, Fluff (Princeton, NJ)
Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean the kiddos can’t have fun at the farm! Head to Terhune Orchards and learn about how different animals keep themselves warm in the winter. After listening to two stories about animals in the cold weather, everyone will get a chance to explore through sense of touch with wool, feathers and more. Each child will make a paper bag animal to take home with lots of "fluff” inside.

Totem Poles (Montclair, NJ)
Help the Montclair Art Museum celebrate its 100th birthday with a creative Native American craft. Led by MAM educator Peg Kenselaar, this workshop will include close observation of the Native American artifacts on view at the museum. You’ll then design, draw, paint and embellish your very own totem pole!

Weekend Family Walk (Chatham, NJ)
With temps warming up just a tad, this is a great weekend to get some fresh air in. Bring the whole family to the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center for an easy hike through the trails. You’ll discover some of the unique plants and animals that call the nature center home in the winter months and a guide will be on hand to answer curious kids’ questions.

Doktor Kaboom! Science is Coming! (Wayne, NJ)
A one-man interactive variety show, Doktor Kaboom keeps crowds riveted and rolling with laughter while creatively blending theater arts with the wonders of scientific exploration. Take in a performance at the Shea Performing Arts Center for a journey of spectacular science experiments designed to both educate and entertain.

Sunday, February 23rd

The Peking Acrobats (Newark, NJ)
Hoop plate spinning! Bowl balancing! Pole Climbing! This troupe of elite gymnasts, cyclists, jugglers, acrobats and tumblers continues to leave family audiences spellbound with their daring demonstrations of agility and grace. The beautiful performance set to live music at NJPAC is truly amazing – watch as the performers transform 2000-year-old traditions into a modern kaleidoscope of movement, defying laws of body mechanics and physics.

Maple Sugar Fest (Summit, NJ)
Get your fill of all things maple syrup this Sunday! Round up the troops and stop by the Reeves-Reed Arboretum for a ton of sweet activities like a family scavenger hunt, a ‘maple syrup challenge’ and of course, a sampling of syrup and flapjacks. Get in a little education for the kids as you learn about how early American settlers tapped trees and all about the actual process of syrup making.
