There are many reasons to love Kierson Farm: its picturesque location and gorgeous facility, the amazing staff, the free introductory lesson, and certainly its family atmosphere, as expressed so well by the testimonials of the Kierson lovers. To know more about what’s to love at Kamp Kierson and what makes this summer camp so special, we spoke with co-owner Jessie Kieren Richardson.
“Well, it’s the largest program in New Jersey, and we have the most professional and well-respected instructors in the state, hands-down,” Richardson says with great confidence (check out the staff credentials here). “But our camp is not just about horseback riding; it’s about the whole experience of being with the animals and loving and caring for them on a daily basis.”
There are several levels to Kamp Kierson. Kids with little to no skills only take one riding lesson a day; the rest of the time is filled with the “experience” of horse camp—the early part of the day starts with meeting up with friends at the camp room home base, getting their horse assignments and bringing their animal in from pasture, and learning how to care for them. After riding lessons, kids have lunch and do fun camp activities like games and arts and crafts, but with an “equestrian” theme. For the more skilled, there is Horsemanship Camp, and for those who can’t get enough of all things horse, there are many options for Sleepaway Kamp Kierson.
