In celebration of Holi, the traditional Indian festival of colors marking the start of spring, The Seaport hosts special programming by The Culture Tree. Kids watch an amazing puppet show and some traditional Holi dance performances, learn to dance in an Indian dance workshop, and make their own Holi-inspired puppets.

Story time and Puppet Making – Festivities kick off at the South Street Seaport Museum with a special bilingual (Hindi – English) book reading of Kahani Rangeeli or Colorful Story. Author Anu Sehgal debuts her first book and reads the colorful story of Holi with Krishna and his friends.

Following the story time, children can make puppets in preparation for the puppet show Colors of Krishna’s Love. Advance registration is required.

Puppet Show – The puppet show, Colors of Krishna’s Love, includes dance, drama, puppetry, songs and a grand finale in which the children can play with their own Krishna, Sudama and Radha puppets.

Holi Dance Performance – The Holi celebration continues with a colorful and vibrant Bhangra dance lesson led by the renowned dancer, Sarina Jain, founder of Masala Bhangra. Jain gets everyone moving with Bhangra dance, an energetic traditional folk dance from Punjab. Dholi Amrit from Premier Drummers joins in to provide a soundtrack of traditional beats.

Powder Play – The festivities end with powder play, the quintessential part of Holi, in which everyone can play Holi with colors (Holi Hai!!). Holi’s signature colored powders may be purchased from vendors at the event.
