Taking a Day Trip to the Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania
In this household, summer months are very predictable year after year. June is filled with enthusiasm, excitement, sibling fun and happiness. July brings less enthusiasm, lots of excitement, little sleep, and less sibling love. By August we are downright sleep deprived, sunburnt, and ready to throw our siblings under the nearest train.

All of which means that we have to get out of the house in August! There are lots of day trips we will be taking…but canoeing in the Delaware Water Gap is one of the ones I’m most looking forward to.
Granted, there’s lots of great canoeing in CT. But for a lot of reasons, we’ll be heading about 2 hours away to the Delaware Water Gap to check out canoeing on the Delaware River.
In addition to the great beauty of the Gap, there’s lots of history that kids can really appreciate. We’ll check out the Antoine Dutot Gallery and Museum to start the day. The museum is housed in n 1850 brick schoolhouse (open Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5), and provides visitors with a great peek into life one hundred years ago. The museum’s website offers a lot of history of the area worth reading before you travel to the Gap.

Once you’ve read up on the history, visit Adventure Sport, Inc., where you can choose from all manner of river adventures…rafting, canoeing or kayaking. Trips range from 2 hours in length to 2 days. The river and surrounding areas are beautiful and pristine, and provide homes for lots of local wildlife, including black bears and deer.

If you’re not too tired after your river adventure, drive 15 minutes further west on Rte 80 to visit the Tannserville outlet shopping center.

After a day like this one, the kids will be too tired to argue. Mission accomplished!
