Looking for the best things to do in New York City this Memorial Day weekend? Here are some family-friendly events and activities to add to your list for this long holiday weekend.

Memorial Day weekend heralds the return of Fleet Week, and NYC is looking positively ship-shape. In addition to visiting some super cool vessels, families can trek to Jones Beach for the Bethpage Air Show, hop in a rowboat for FREE in Hunts Point, and reserve a spot on the W.O. Decker tugboat. Memorial Day parades are back in Brooklyn and Queens, and 14 miles of NYC beaches open to welcome sandcastle builders, waders, and body surfers.

The Lower East Side Festival of the Arts is creative nirvana with a pile of FREE performances, FREE movies under the stars are lighting up screens in parks all over town, and you can get into a family groove at a DanceAfrica Community Workshop in Brooklyn Bridge Park or even sing along with the Encanto crew at Camp on Fifth Avenue.

Of course, it's not too late to plan a seasonal day trip or even a quick weekend getaway. If that's not enough to keep your brood entertained, bookmark our Family Activity Calendar to see what else NYC has up its sleeve. It's going to be an epic summer.

New York City screens tons of FREE outdoor movies each summer, and many of them are just for kids and families. We keep an eye on these special outdoor summer movie screenings all season long, including the Movies Under the Stars series, which offers screenings in some of our favorite parks and playgrounds, Bryant Park Movie Nights, and Sidewalk Cinema.

Movies usually begin when evening falls, but plan to arrive early to stake out a good viewing spot. Even if your local park is screening a flick you've watched a dozen times before, it's a totally different experience viewing it in the open air alongside other fans. It's a thrilling, communal event, and a summer rite of passage for New Yorkers of all ages. Speaking of summer, find all our seasonal must-dos in our Summer Fun Guide for NYC Kids.

Manhattan is a mecca for private elementary schools, and many offer robust Pre-K programs. These private elementary schools on Mahattan's Upper East and Upper West Sides vary in size and educational philosophy, providing families with plenty of opportunities to find the right fit for their children.

The best part of starting early: If your child gets into the Pre-K program at one of these private elementary schools, they can often continue their primary and even secondary private school education without having to apply again.

As you embark on the process of finding the perfect fit for your little one, it's worth bookmarking this piece on 10 questions to ask during a preschool tour, and our Preschool Directory is an excellent resource to find more programs in Manhattan and beyond as well.
