It is never too early to introduce your child to art. In the Hartford area, one tends to think of the grandiose Wadsworth, or perhaps the sleek New Britain Museum of American Art, but don’t overlook the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington. There, in the 1901 Colonial Revival house turned museum, both art and history come alive. How green is your family? In honor of Earth Day on April 22, there are lots of fun events in the Hartford area where families can celebrate the environment and learn how to be more ecologically responsible. Of course, you don’t need to attend a special event to help take care of the planet—just grab some gloves and go pick up trash at a local park, plant seeds, or repurpose natural materials in creative ways. But celebrating the Earth alongside other eco-conscious families is an engaging way to teach kids about respecting Mother Nature.

When you walk into Shady Glen, you feel as if you have stepped back in time to the 1950s. Waitresses wear old-fashioned green dress uniforms with white aprons, and cooks sport pointy paper hats. Kids can slide into booths or spin on the counter stools arranged around a bustling kitchen and soda fountain. This classic burger joint and ice cream shop has been featured on the Travel Channel for its unique cheeseburgers, although it began as a dairy store and scoops are still its main draw. The grub is not fancy, but it is good solid comfort food served in a fun atmosphere. Top it all off with homemade ice cream and this Hartford area classic is a sweet outing to try with kids!
