Best Brooklyn Bridge Park Playgrounds (Ranked!)

Katie Nave's picture Submitted by Katie Nave on Thu, 08/16/2018 - 4:44pm

The super popular Water Lab at Pier 6 can get crowded, so come early!

Few city playgrounds can compare to what Brooklyn Bridge Park has to offer. Running 1.3 miles along the East River on a defunct cargo shipping and storage complex, the 85-acre waterfront space is host to a water paradise, Tarzan swings, slides, tunnels, and the city’s largest sandbox. Plus, the Lower Manhattan skyline view never fails to give me major city feels.

If you’ve packed your sunscreen and stamina, you can take the family to experience them all, but if you want to prioritize, we’ve ranked them for you. All of the Brooklyn Bridge Park playgrounds are fun, but our faves at the top of the list offer the most equipment, most variety, amenities, and wow-factor.

New York Transit Museum: An Amazing Underground Museum

Katie Nave's picture Submitted by Katie Nave on Wed, 08/01/2018 - 10:00am

Riding the subway is a major part of the magic of being a city kid. In fact, my daughter has taken to begging for F train rides each sweltering afternoon, which isn't quite my idea of summer fun. Luckily, we found a favorite museum to scratch the itch.

Since 1976, the New York Transit Museum has been capturing the evolution of mass transportation in our city. Housed underground in an actual subway station in Downtown Brooklyn, the train museum has a rotating collection of 20 vintage subway cars for the entire family to board, explore, and imagine a city life of the past.

The added five acres of open space includes a great open lawn, an exploratory labyrinth for kiddos of all ages, and a dedicated outdoor space for performances and events. This latest addition brings the park of epic playgrounds to 90% completion.

Katie Nave's picture Submitted by Katie Nave on Fri, 06/08/2018 - 10:30am

Kids participate in hands-on art projects at ColorLab at the Brooklyn Children's Museum.

Rainy, steamy, and sticky summer days in New York City have met their match. If you’re in desperate need of indoor activities that will engage and inspire the whole family (in the air conditioning!), check out ColorLab, a new family art studio at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) in Crown Heights.

The just-opened studio space within this top NYC kid museum encourages kids and adults to create collages, sculptures, drawings, and other artworks, through independent exploration, hands-on collaboration, and experimentation—and you get to take your creations home.

An ice rink is opening for summertime fun on Governors Island.

Adding to the long list of summer family fun to be had on Governors Island, visitors will now be able to ice skate with a view of the Statue of Liberty. Opening Saturday, May 26, Mel’s Rink Governors Island, gives New Yorkers the chance to ice skate during the summer months thanks to a synthetic material specifically designed for metal ice skates, offering an “ice-like” feel.

A Dream Machine Pop-Up Experience Is Coming to Brooklyn

Katie Nave's picture Submitted by Katie Nave on Tue, 04/03/2018 - 9:08am

If you’re looking for an especially unique experience for you and your kids on a rainy day this spring in NYC, consider taking a journey through your dreams together. Dream Machine, an interactive pop-up experience is opening in Williamsburg on April 5 and will run through the end of May. Akin to other Instagram-friendly spots like the soon-to-launch Museum of Candy and the past Museum of Ice Cream, this new spot is ready for snaps.

Dream Machine visitors will take an hourlong, self-guided journey through 10 immersive rooms, each inspired by our sleep cycles. These elaborately decorated spaces encourage dreamers to get hands-on in the middle of the magical REM cycle.
