Natalie Silverstein's picture Submitted by Natalie Silverstein on Mon, 07/08/2013 - 1:27am

Now that summer is officially in full swing, Long Island beach waves beckon. If you have a kid that is itching to hang ten, there are plenty of excellent surf schools to teach well, and safely. While Montauk boasts the most surf schools, and some of the biggest waves, there are schools all along the South Fork that teach aspiring surfer dudes how to paddle and ride. Don't forget to remind the kids, as Laird Hamilton said, "wiping out is an under-appreciated skill."

Enjoy fireworks on Independence Day and beyond in the Hamptons and North Fork. This weekend is full of opportunities for families to get together, head outdoors, and to celebrate this quintessential, All-American holiday. Two historic local fire departments, North Sea and Greenport host annual carnivals, which includes Saturday night fireworks. Or visit the Riverhead Raceway to take in some shooting cars on the track and shooting stars in the sky. In the mood for some live theater? Then hop on the ferry from Sag Harbor to Shelter Island and check out the Gizmo Guys: Objects In Motion, or stay on shore and see The Three Little Pigs at Goat on a Boat. Take your little princess to the iconic Castle in Westhampton for breakfast and games with a real princess. Read on for our best picks for the first weekend in July.

Kid Activities In The Hamptons And North Fork This Weekend: June 22-23

Natalie Silverstein's picture Submitted by Natalie Silverstein on Wed, 06/19/2013 - 7:06pm

It's hard to believe, but the summer solstice, the official point of midsummer and the day with the most hours of sunlight, is Friday, June 21st. From this point forward, daylight hours actually get shorter. But don't panic; there's plenty of summer ahead, and for some just finishing school, summer vacation is just beginning. Before we kick into high gear with July 4th celebrations, it's a great weekend to get out there and experience all that summer in the Hamptons and North Fork has to offer. For those who love the outdoors, there is a full strawberry moon night hike, as well as a seashell identification walk and the Greenport Farmer's Market. For the book-ish, dig into reading at the Hampton Library or check out the Water Mill Center grounds for art, yoga, and puppetry. Read on for a full listing of events this weekend.

Kid Activities In The Hamptons And North Fork This Weekend: June 15-16

Natalie Silverstein's picture Submitted by Natalie Silverstein on Tue, 06/11/2013 - 11:14pm

It's the middle of June, and that means several things: strawberries, hayrides, and Father's Day love. As the weather gets warmer, it's a great time to explore the North Fork, where this weekend you'll find the Father's Day Farm Fest at the Harbes Family Farm, as well as the 59th Annual Lions Club Strawberry Festival. This Mattituck tradition kicks off Thursday night and runs through Sunday with rides, fireworks, and plenty of strawberry treats. Bring your appetite. There are also opportunities to create crafts for Dad on his special day, or take advantage of half-price admission for Father's Day at the Long Island Game Farm. Looking for something a little more cultural? The Parrish Art Museum in Watermill is hosting open studio and a family gallery talk and art workshop. Read on for a full listing of weekend activities for June 15-16.

The last few weeks of school are always fun, but hectic and exhausting.  This weekend, take some time to relax, reconnect, and don't forget to celebrate Dad and other loved ones on Father's Day.  There are opportunities for kids to create handmade gifts (always the best) in Southampton and Riverhead.  It's also a great weekend for cool science projects:  Dissect a shark and learn about driftology and nature art at the Natural History Museum, or take a "funtastic" science class at the Children's Museum of the East End.  And if you want to get outside and move little bodies, check out the 5K run/walk and kids' fun run in Southampton.  Read on for our top picks for this weekend in the Hamptons and North Fork.
