March GoList: The Best Things to Do in Westchester with Kids

Submitted by Susan Miele on Sun, 02/23/2020 - 6:00am

March winds bring not only April showers but also much fun in and around Westchester, with lots to do both indoors and out.

The first half of the month brings the peak of maple-sugaring season, allowing families to join naturalists in tapping maple trees and evaporating this blasé-looking liquid into the sublime sticky stuff we all know and love. Some events—like the Maple Sugaring Party—are loaded with assorted embellishments, including the ultimate pleasure—eating it atop pancakes!

As for holidays, March is also known as Women’s History Month, and we have assorted recognition events on our calendar that are family-focused. March is also replete with celebrations of Purim, including “out of this world fun” at Purim in Outer Space, along with numerous ways to celebrate being Irish (or pretend that you are), like one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York. There are numerous hot-ticket alerts for live kid shows, including The Peking Acrobats, and while we await warmer temperatures, indoor highlights include the return of STEM-tastic.

Note: The Pout-Pout Fish is now sold out, and if you’re looking for the Annual WHUD Kids Fair, that’s scheduled for April this year.

Grab your calendars and read on for our top things to do with kids this month in Westchester and the Hudson Valley. Also be sure to check out our Event Calendar to be up-to-date on even more of the great goings-on this month!

Both Winter Break and February wrap up with a weekend that might not offer large-scale events, but good things come in small packages (and our top picks are generally easy on the wallet).

A predominant offering is maple sugaring, as peak season runs from mid-February through mid-March. For added fun, Maple Sugar Tours kick off on Saturday with assorted extra activities beyond the tapping experience. Catch a show about predators as part of the Saturday Morning Family Series or see the surreal antics of MUMMENSCHANZ. Black History Month is being recognized with assorted programming, including an African Dance and Drum Performance. Looking for a new sport? Give rugby a shot at a FREE clinic.

So much fun, both indoors and outdoors, awaits Westchester and Hudson Valley families this winter weekend! Our February GoList heralded several of our faves, and below are some more to choose from.

One of the headliners is the annual Hudson River Eaglefest, a multi-site event that celebrates the eagle’s return to Westchester, with viewing points up and down the river plus various attractions. It’s also time to celebrate the Year of the Rat, and we’ve identified several ways to do so, including the annual Chinese New Year Festival at Purchase College and the Lunar New Year Festival at the Hudson River Museum. For those looking to embrace the season, get outdoors for Winter on the Farm, replete with a pancake brunch, or take advantage of maple-sugaring season at Tappin' the Maple Trees.

We love how many of our top picks this weekend are FREE! Be sure to consult our Event Calendar for tons of activities every single day. If you haven't done so already, sign up for our newsletters to stay in the know!

Things To Do in Westchester this Weekend: Toying with Science, Winter Hoot, Groundhog Day

Submitted by Susan Miele on Wed, 01/29/2020 - 11:45am

See Gary Krinsky's "Toying with Science" at the Emelin Theatre on Saturday.

As mentioned in our hot-off-the-press February GoList, this month is loaded with reasons for festivities for Westchester and Hudson Valley families, and this weekend is no exception.

You might embrace the season at Old-Fashioned Winter’s Afternoon, with a log-sawing contest and other sorts of fun, or whoop it up at the three-day music-and-more Winter Hoot. But if you like FREE as much as we do, February is packed with ways to kick of the Year of the Rat, and this weekend’s Lunar New Year Celebration is one of the standouts. Or celebrate another holiday at It's Groundhog Day! (also FREE), one of several such events this weekend. If you're in the mood for a show, snag a seat to the STEM-fully entertaining Toying with Science.

February GoList: Best Things To Do in Westchester with Kids

Submitted by Susan Miele on Sun, 01/26/2020 - 9:00am

Though February is prone to unsavory weather, the bright side is the many exciting family events happening in Westchester and the Hudson Valley. With celebrations of Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Black History Month, Mardi Gras, Lunar New Year, and Leap Day, the fun is sure to chase away the chill! Among the standouts are the WACA Chinese New Year Festival, and the sure-to-sell-out Victorian Valentine Tea.

Check out other February traditions like Old-Fashioned Winter’s Afternoon, offering a wintry mix of fun; and Maple Sugaring Tours (with a kick-off party, to boot), heralding the launch of maple-sugaring season. Beyond all this, there are numerous shows we’re itching to see (unfortunately, Pete the Cat, highlighted in our 50 winter activities post, is sold out). Soon we’ll be telling you all the great reasons not to go away for Winter Break, one of which is that the Royal Hanneford Circus is coming to town.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! Read on for the full list of our month’s top picks, and remember you'll find many more on our Event Calendar, plus lots more on the way. Sign up for our newsletters to keep track of new finds!

Things To Do in Westchester this Weekend: Winterfest, Bindlestiff Cirkus, Owls

Submitted by Susan Miele on Wed, 01/22/2020 - 10:00am

The final weekend of January brings lots of fun indoor and outdoor winter activities for Westchester and Hudson Valley families. Whether you're looking to embrace winter or dodge it, there's a variety of programming to choose from.

If your family is in the "embrace winter" camp, your best bet may be the FREE Hyde Park Winterfest, offering assorted snow sports plus warming treats like marshmallow-roasting and hot cocoa. Alternatively, try the Winter Story Walk, a less sporty affair that ventures into the nature preserve but also tops off with cocoa and treats; this, too, is FREE.

Our favorite performance this week is by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. Crafty indoor fun (with an eco-conscious bent) can be found at the upcycling Book/Magazine Sculpture Workshop. Fans of American Girl dolls—or even stuffed animals—can gear up for Lunar New Year by crafting doll attire and learning about the holiday.

There's more where that came from, so read on for our top picks. Be sure to check out our Event Calendar for daily activities. If you haven't done so already, sign up for our newsletters to stay in the know!
