Nick Gabaldon Day

Nick Gabaldon Day commemorates the life of the first documented surfer of African American and Mexican descent. The day includes beach activities and free surf lessons at the city's historic African American beach. Later in the day Santa Monica Pier Aquarium offers free admission and special activities.
2023 Schedule
9am: Welcome Ceremony and Nick Gabaldon Tribute Paddle Out at Bay Street Beach
10am-1pm: Free surf lessons, beach and local history exploration, and cleanup at Bay Street Beach. Surfers must register in advance.
1pm - 4pm:The celebration moves over to Heal the Bay's Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, which is free for all visitors in honor of Nick Gabaldon Day. The festivities include a documentary screening at 1pm and 3pm and a children's storytime at 2pm.
