Can you thrive for a day in 1518? That’s a question Siri cannot answer at Wigwam Escape, since cell phones (and watches) are not allowed inside this historically-themed escape room recently opened at The Institute for American Indian Studies Museum & Research Center. The popularity of escape rooms has surged in recent years, and they're especially appealing to kids who love the thrill of solving problems and puzzles on a tight deadline. Wigwam Escape is no exception, except that the unique Native American historical setting adds a truly meaningful educational and family-bonding opportunity to the adrenaline rush.

History buffs, lovers of liberty, marathon runners, and cheering spectators: Welcome to your favorite weekend of the year! Commemorating the opening engagement in the American Revolution, Patriots' Day is celebrated with various events, from parades to battle reenactments. To cheer on runners rather than revolutionaries, scope out a family-friendly spot to watch the racers with kids at the 123rd Boston Marathon.

If you and your kids' tastes run more toward the arts, grab your seats to Tap Dogs, put on your dancing shoes at the New England Folk Festival. Of course, April is a month filled with opportunities to soak up the increasing sunshine. Do not forget to check out our April GoList: Best Things to Do With Kids in Boston and the spring fun guide. For even more ideas, browse our Event Calendar, like our Facebook page, and subscribe to our free newsletter.

"Trick-or-treat!" Kids of all ages love reciting those magic words in exchange for bags filled with goodies. Walking through the streets and knocking on strangers’ doors late in the evening, however, may not be the best option for toddlers and preschoolers. Luckily, New Jersey offers plenty of opportunities for safe trick-or-treating in controlled environments. From pumpkin farms to amusement parks to community events, you can experience the fun of trick-or-treating without worry at these structured, family-friendly outings.

Tractor Pulls and Rodeos at These Connecticut Country Fairs

From exciting carnival rides, to petting zoos and fabulous (or wacky!) food, country fairs are often a family tradition and a childhood right of passage. Since Connecticut offers no shortage of them, choose a day (or days!) and gather family and friends for a rodeo or tractor pull, witness an irresistibly adorable pig race, or wear your stretchy pants for a one-of-a-kind pie eating contest. Whether you plan on spending the day in Goshen, the Haddam area, or venture to Brooklyn in the Quiet Corner of the state, you're sure to have a day filled with giggles, endearing animal encounters, and fireworks that light up the evening sky.

For even more ideas, check out our Event Calendar, the August GoList, and the Summer Fun Guide (there's still a little time left for that). For the latest and best family-friends events, follow Mommy Poppins on Facebook, Twitter, Instragram, and Pinterest.
