Nature Camps in the Hartford Area

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sat, 01/06/2018 - 9:33pm

Summer camps bring to mind images of wilderness exploration, sitting by the campfire roasting marshmallows, being outside in the sun, and just enjoying nature. Many of us grew up experiencing such moments in our back yards, and today you can help to create the same memories for your children by sending them to one of these great Hartford County nature-themed camps. Also, be sure to check out our CT Summer Camp Guide and our Summer Camp Directory.

Inflatable Fun! A Visit to Bounce Town in Canton

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sat, 12/30/2017 - 11:59am

Too wet? Too cold? Too hot? No problem. The climate-controlled Bounce Town in Canton provides a great outing for children, no matter what the season or the reason. Oversized inflatables will entertain for hours: rush up the ladder of a fire truck, go under the sea on a Nemo-like adventure, chase each other through a Frozen bouncy house, giggle your way down the bumpy Kahuna slide (my daughter couldn’t get enough of this one), and challenge each other to a basketball shootout. Kids will leave exhausted, happy, and begging to return.

Silver Lights Festival Adds Sparkle to the Season

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sat, 12/02/2017 - 6:46pm

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, gorillas swung from trees, playful penguins surrounded an igloo, and a seal put on a rooftop show. Technically, the time is now, the land is the not-so-distant city of Meriden, and the adorable creatures are more than 300 characters featured during the Festival of Lights. This annual and very family-friendly holiday lights event in the New Haven area is not to be missed due to its charm, great photo opportunities, and affordable price tag (umm, it's free!).

Attending a musical or theatrical performance is a beloved holiday tradition. If you have a budding ballerina in your midst and Clara's story is on your "must see" list, don't worry: we also have you covered for performances of The Nutcracker. 25 Things to Do With Kids in Connecticut on Columbus Day

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 10/04/2017 - 11:20am

Lucky for us that we live in a world with Octobers, particularly in Connecticut. Columbus Day falls during one of the loveliest times of the year bringing crisp autumn days filled with all things us New Englanders love best: pumpkin everything, cider donuts and some pretty stellar leaf peeping.  Columbus Day offers a great excuse for the playground or event digging in the sand and looking for seashells at the beach. Whether you're in the mood for aviation history, sharks or jellyfish, tigers or sloths, Renaissance masterpieces, testing your agility or your taste buds, or a scenic drive, you will likely find something for everyone on our list of recommendations. Here, in no particular order, are plenty of ways to spend a Monday off from school.

Parks, Farms & Nature Places to Visit This Fall in Granby

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Tue, 09/12/2017 - 6:01am

At the northern tip of Hartford County, you'll find a pastoral oasis: the towns of Granby, East Granby, West Granby and North Granby. Their rolling hills and dense woods make for some of the best hiking in the county, and an abundance of farms offer exciting and delicious experiences for children of all ages. Whenever my family craves a break from city noise and concrete buildings, we head to one of the Granby towns where tranquility and open vistas await, Spring, Summer, or Fall! Without further ado and in no particular order, here are our top 10 favorite stops in the area:

Where The Wild Things Are...Waiting for You: at Beardsley Zoo

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Mon, 09/04/2017 - 11:53am

Where can you gaze into the eyes of Siberian tigers, watch the antics of a red panda or the graceful dance of a colorful peacock, admire the perfect stillness of a sloth or trace the movements of turtles, or be wowed by the size of a bison - all in one day? At Beardsley Zoo, of course. Listed at the top of our 120 Things to Do With Kids in Connecticut, our state's only zoological park has been harboring endangered species, promoting conservation, and delighting visitors of all ages for nearly 100 years.
