Sherlock Exhibit Solves the Most Confounding Mystery of Them All

Submitted by Elaine Paoloni ... on Wed, 11/21/2018 - 10:00am

Calling all sleuths! There’s a mystery brewing in Jersey City, and Liberty Science Center needs your help to solve it. At The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes, the latest exhibit at the favorite New Jersey science spot, children and adults hunt for clues in a beautifully detailed exhibit that teaches the science behind detective work and puts it to the test to solve an elaborate murder mystery.

Hunt for clues on the streets of Victorian London, learn about poisonous plants, forensics, send Morse code messages, and then, detective notebook in hand, document your deductions by embossing, stamping, rubbing, and punching holes in paper. Finally, puzzle out what the all evidence means to solve the mystery.

This highly interactive and educational exhibit solves the one mystery families are always looking to crack: where to spend a great day that the whole family will enjoy. And we’re here to clue you in on what to expect, who it’s best for, and what you need to know before you go.

New Indigo Bookstore Brings Kid-Friendly Fun to Short Hills Mall

Submitted by Elaine Paoloni ... on Mon, 11/12/2018 - 1:00pm

The company, which bills itself as a cultural department store, is a cross between an upscale bookstore and Crate & Barrel.

I have fond memories of finding a quiet spot to read Curious George in Waldenbooks and B. Dalton as a child. Then in college, I flocked to Barnes & Noble and Borders, which offered cool cafes and products beyond just books.

But other than Barnes & Noble, it seems most of the big bookstore chains wrote the last page in their stories years ago. You don’t hear about too many bookstore openings these days—until now.

Indigo, Canada’s largest bookseller, opened its first U.S. location in the Short Hills Mall last month, and it’s just what we needed. Billed as a "cultural department store," Indigo is a cross between an upscale bookstore and Crate & Barrel, with neutral colors, clean style, and an elegant use of space. But most importantly, there is a huge children’s section, complete with plenty of space to play and explore, as well as a calendar packed with storytimes and special events, like the recent visit from Goosebumps author R.L. Stine.

New Snapology Play Space To Offer STEM Fun for Central NJ Kids

Submitted by Elaine Paoloni ... on Mon, 11/05/2018 - 12:20pm

Kids can build with LEGOs, KEVA planks, Magna-Tiles, and more at Snapology's new Discovery Center.

Getting kids interested in math and science used to be a chore, but play-based programs are reinventing the building blocks of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) education.

Snapology of Monmouth County is one business that has been offering mobile STEAM classes to kids in central New Jersey for the past couple years. Now, it is expanding its offerings to include a new Discovery Center, making it the first Snapology location in New Jersey to offer open indoor play. The Center, in Tinton Falls, will also offer classes, camps, birthday parties, and parents' night out events.

The new 2,950-square-foot Discovery Center is scheduled to open Thanksgiving weekend. The fun will kick off on Friday, November 23, with Black Friday drop-and-shop workshops, and a grand opening celebration will take place Saturday and Sunday, November 24-25, from noon to 5pm, with free open play, giveaways, face painting, entertainment, and more.

Paterson Great Falls: History and Natural Beauty for NJ Families

Submitted by Elaine Paoloni ... on Thu, 10/18/2018 - 2:00pm

Get a great view of the falls from Mary Ellen Kramer Park.

Waterfalls are one of those treasures in life that we don’t often come across—but when we do, we’re mesmerized.

While New Jersey has a handful of picturesque cascades, most are tucked away on hiking trails or in wooded areas, such as Hemlock Falls in the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange or Boonton Falls in Grace Lord Park in Boonton.

If you’re not much of a backpacker, however, or are just looking for a quick jaunt, check out Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park in Paterson. It’s an easy day trip with a view to remember—and one you can drive right up to.

Are Daycare Kids Better Behaved? This Study Says Yes

Torn between a nanny, daycare, or staying home with your kids? Choosing childcare can be a difficult—and deeply personal—decision for any family, and of course involves a number of factors, from costs to the length of your commute. A new study out of France suggests that daycare might offer some significant advantages in terms of our kids' development.

Researchers at Sorbonne Université in Paris followed nearly 1,500 kids from the womb to age 8 as they either attended a center-based daycare or were cared for by a nanny or family member. The daycare kids, particularly those who attended at least a year before the age of three, were less likely to have problems with peers and other emotional and behavioral issues, according to the researchers.

30 Reasons Why New Jersey Is the Best Place To Raise Kids

Submitted by Elaine Paoloni ... on Sun, 07/22/2018 - 5:00pm

Be a daredevil while having tons of fun at Sahara Sam's, one of NJ's great waterparks.

Anyone who lives in New Jersey knows it’s a great place to grow up. Sure, the taxes can be astronomical—but there are serene sandy beaches and winding wooded trails to explore, the food and culture is first-rate, and all-American small towns with top schools attract young families.

The international nongovernmental group Save the Children recently added one more benefit: in a spring study, it named New Jersey the state most likely to offer a safe, secure, and healthy childhood.

Whether you’re looking for reasons to move to New Jersey or want to remind yourself why you love it, here is our list of what keeps families happy and healthy in the Garden State.
