3 Days on Long Island with Kids: Ultimate Itinerary by a Local Dad

Submitted by James Smith on Fri, 01/27/2023 - 6:47am

Long Island is known for its glorious beaches, and no visit here is complete without dipping your toes in the sand. Photo courtesy of Discover Long Island

Few places offer as many things to do as Long Island. In what other region of the country, for example, can you treat your kids to a morning museum visit in Nassau County, then whisk them off later to one of the most talked-about beaches in the Hamptons?

For the record, yours truly is a Long Island native with roots on the East End. I’ve lived in all three sections of Long Island before settling in central Suffolk, where I am raising my kids. Much as I struggle with the winter snowstorms, summer humidity, Long Island Rail Road delays, and seemingly endless parkway traffic, I’d never live anywhere else.

No, you won’t suffer from a shortage of things to do here, and I've put together a 3-day itinerary showcasing some of the area's riches, which include pro sports, state parks, seasonal celebrations, amusement parks, farm fun, and plenty more. And if you like sand on your toes, Long Island has some of the finest and most kid-friendly beaches in the Northeast. So the plan here is to introduce you to a number of must-do things when visiting Long Island.

Best of 2022 Long Island Kid Edition: Top Openings, Happenings, and Other Awesome Stuff We Loved

Submitted by James Smith on Sun, 12/25/2022 - 11:00am

Graff Lab opened the door on creativity and legal street art to Long Island kids this year. Photo by Jaime Sumersille

Long Island enjoyed several kid-friendly openings in 2022 that represented a modest return to normalcy for parents who longed for additions to the time-honored lineup of family-friendly experiences we’ve grown to love.

While it’s true that, at times, we leaned on Long Island’s beaches, farm stands, and libraries for another year of family fun, we also saw the doors open on new play spaces, hiking and biking trails, and family-friendly restaurants. Some of them were even FREE for the public to enjoy. And as these new venues opened, our parent-strong team of local writers was there to give you Mommy Poppins’ first impressions.

Here is a look back at Long Island's kid-friendly openings in 2022 that inspired us, elevated us (literally), enlightened us, but mostly just brought us together. Check them out at your convenience and know we will be here in 2023 with the skinny on all family-friendly things to do on Long Island.

Holiday Break in Atlanta: Fun Things To Do Between Christmas and New Year's Eve

Blink and you may have missed December flying by as it's already the winter holiday break! While kids look forward to getting time off from school, some parents fret about keeping their children entertained for two whole weeks. Fortunately, Atlanta boasts plenty of winter break activities sure to please children and teens of all ages.

Because kids don't have to wake up early for school, take advantage of evening ideas like Enchanting Christmas Light Displays  and Atlanta Holiday Shows & Performances. Try outdoor activities, such as ice skating and family hikes, since Atlanta's weather is generally mild. Save money during winter holiday break by getting an Atlanta CityPass, which saves you money at many of Atlanta's top attractions, including Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and more.

Playa Largo Resort & Spa: Family-Friendly Fun in Key Largo, Florida Keys

Submitted by James Smith on Sat, 12/03/2022 - 12:00pm

Playa Largo is the perfect family resort for a Florida Keys vacation.

If you think about it, the Florida Keys are truly an ideal family vacation destination. Where else can the kids enjoy postcard sunsets, crystal seas, gentle breezes, and exciting water sports without having to leave the country? But until a recent hotel building boom, the Keys have largely been the playground of overstressed grown-ups soaking in the Margaritaville vibe. Mommy Poppins readers know that’s changing. In 2021, we shared our favorite Florida Keys resorts and hotels for families. The latest addition to that list is Playa Largo Resort & Spa.

Playa Largo Resort & Spa is located in the south end of Key Largo, less than two hours from Miami. Part of Marriott’s boutique Autograph Collection, the 178-room resort features a pool, water sports, on-site dining, and one of the few true beachfronts in the rocky Keys. Check out our review of Playa Largo, then visit our Florida Family Travel Guide for more fun in the Sunshine State.

25 Things to Do in Narragansett, RI with Kids

Submitted by James Smith on Sun, 06/26/2022 - 7:22pm

Narragansett is the gateway to Rhode Island's tourist treasures, like Newport and Block Island. Photo by John Riviello (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Occasionally referred to as Newport’s little cousin, Narragansett offers families a four-seasons getaway minus the touristy hustle and bustle of Rhode Island’s more celebrated destination a few miles to the east. And we've got you covered with tips on the best things to do in Narragansett with kids once you get there.

Narragansett is more intimate than Newport, whose trendy shops and stately mansions attract visitors from New England to the New York metropolitan area and beyond. But if you’re eager for some fun with the kids at less than Newport prices, pay a visit to Narrangansett, accessible in less than 90 minutes from Boston and less than an hour from the New London ferries that connect to Long Island.
