What’s open in coronavirus shutdown: parks, beaches, hikes you can do while social distancing

The past few weeks have consistently become more and more uncertain, and what started as caution quickly turned into school closures, remote jobs, and a recommendation to stay home as much as possible. With the city on lockdown our normally robust calendar of events has dwindled down to cancellations, postponements, and virtual activities as we try to navigate our current norm of social distancing, however, we don't think that means your weekend has to be any less fun than normal.

We rounded up a slew of activities that will keep you engaged and entertained all weekend long. And while rain is in the forecast, if it holds off and you're able to get outdoors this weekend to take advantage of some passive recreation, please stay aware and safe! And if all else fails, don't forget to consult our parents' pandemic guide with hundreds of at-home activities and crafts.

Things to Do in Houston This Weekend with Kids: Spring Break, St. Patrick's Day

Spring Break fun isn't ending just yet; many places are extending their Spring Break festivities for another week this year, and with St. Patrick's Day falling this weekend as well we're reading to keep the fun rolling! Whether you're watching attending the annual Houston St. Patrick's Day Parade, listening to live Celtic music at Market Square Park, or heading to the St. Patrick's Day Festival at Levy Park, there are all sorts of fun events happening that just beg for you to don your favorite green attire.

As if that wasn't enough, we also have done some pretty awesome round-ups lately on Spring activities. We all love a good playground, and Houston is home to many amazing ones. Swinging as high as you possibly can on the swingsets, racing down slides, reaching bar after bar on the monkey bars, climbing up, over, and under the different equipment; being outdoors and active on the playground is practically a pinnacle of childhood. Given that we spend a lot of time exploring Houston, playground stops for us are frequent and varied, and we've narrowed down some of Houston's best playgrounds for kids.

It's hard to believe it's already time for Spring Break, but many kids are done counting down and gearing up to celebrate a week off of school, and we're ready to get rolling on the Spring Break fun with you! If you're sticking around town, here's a little taste of all the different events and activities the week off has to offer:

It only happens once every four years... February's got an extra day, which means it's a leap year this weekend. In honor of this unusual extra 24 hours - which just so happen to fall on a Saturday, hallelujah! Some fun things popping up on our calendar this weekend include: the World Championship Bar-B-Que Contest - known casually as 'Cook-Off' - kicking off our 2020 rodeo season, Psyduck's Extra Day at CMH, the Heritage Festival at Spring Creek Park, and Sundays in Nature at Armand Bayou Nature Center.

Everybody say "Hurray!" for a short week because weeks that begin on Tuesday are always a welcome change of pace! We hope you were able to enjoy a day off with the family on Monday, and that this week is flying by because this weekend is packed with some awesome events. We're especially excited about the annual Go Texas Parade in Conroe, Mardi Gras on Main in La Porte, Tales of Texas at George Ranch Historical Park, and On the Trail by Archaelogy Now. There's so many cool events happening all around Houston!

Some other things we're really digging right now are these 63 easy science experiments that you can do with stuff around the house, all of these awesome family-friendly breweries that call Houston home, and these tips for heading to Rodeo with kids.

January has finally come to an end; did anyone else feel like it was much longer than 31 days? This month there are lots ways to enjoy family fun without spending a fortune - see our list of free events and activities happening this month. The Houston Family Magazine Camp Fair, Amazing Alligators at Octavia Fields Branch Library, and Sam Houston Trail Riders Reception are just a sampling of events from our Free February list, and they just so happen to be going on this weekend, too.

And did you know that there are 22 - yes TWENTY TWO - different museums around Houston that offer free admission on certain days and times? Couple that with a Kids Eat Free night and you've got the makings of an awesome day around Houston at minimal cost.
