Things to Do in Houston This Weekend: Trains Over Texas, Nutcracker Market

Submitted by Rachael Cherry on Wed, 11/13/2019 - 10:35pm

All aboard! The trains are pulling into the station this weekend at HMNS. Photo courtesy of Mike Rathke, Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Even though we're not entirely sure how we're already halfway through November, we're embracing the chaos of the season and gearing up to start planning and attending all the holiday festivities! To help you manage the mayhem, we've been working tirelessly to find the best events to attend this season and have started compiling resources that make it easy for you to sift through everything that's happening and pick what to attend with your family. From craft fairs and markets to Christmas towns and villages to visit, the fun is just getting started!

And just in case you're feeling the need to relax just a little bit before all the chaos really breaks loose, now is also the perfect time to head to one of these kid-friendly wineries in the hill country. The views are stunning and so is the vino! Or just tell one of these jokes for kids; you'll keep the whole family in stitches, guaranteed.

We also highly recommend checking out our Fall Fun and Harvest Guide, event calendar, November GoList, and our FREE in November posts for even more seasonal fun. Plus, if you subscribe to our FREE weekly newsletter, we'll send all the fun happening on Mommy Poppins straight to you!

Did you know that you can also submit your own event to our calendar? Once submitted, we'll review it and publish it to share with all of our readers!

Now let's check out what the weekend holds for Houston.

Breakfast, Brunch & More Christmas Festivities with Santa for Houston Kids

Submitted by Rachael Cherry on Fri, 11/08/2019 - 7:28pm

A breakfast feast with Santa is the perfect start to the morning./Photo courtesy of the Woodlands Children's Museum.

Ready or not, the holidays are officially here and there are tons of family-friendly events around the city to kick off the festivities and see Santa before he drops off all his presents. One of our favorite ways to celebrate the holidays is by having a good, old-fashioned breakfast with Santa...especially when breakfast is followed by lots of crafts and activities and plenty of photos with the man in red.

And if that wasn't enough, in addition to breakfast with Santa we also included brunch with Santa, cookies with Santa, and more fun events, ensuring you have plenty of face time with the big guy so he knows exactly what you want for Christmas this year.

Looking for even more Christmas activities and festivities? You'll definitely want to check out our guide to all things Christmas, Hannukah, and holiday fun in Houston this year.

Like any respectable adult, you're probably currently in a candy-induced coma... and how could you not be? It's practically in the parent job description that all Halloween candy must be sampled before any kids can consume it, right? Parental responsibilities are tough sometimes! Which is why we're going to make planning out your upcoming weekend extra easy by providing you with all of the best events and activities around town!

Candy aside, the conclusion of Halloween also means that it's November... and that means that the holiday season is officially about to take off! However, before the holiday hustle and bustle sets in, there's still time to take advantage of some of our favorite fall festivities. Froberg's Farm, Dewberry Farms, and P-6 Farms are all keeping their fall fun happening through the first part of November so you can snag the perfect pumpkin patch pictures and take part in fall favorites like corn mazes and hayrides for a little bit longer.

This weekend also celebrates Dia de los Muertos, and there are a ton of awesome events planned around the city. MECA, the National Museum of Funeral History, Magnolia Park, The Heights, and the East End are just a handful of placing hosting Dia de los Muertos events where you can honor loved ones who have passed on and partake in other cultural traditions and activities. We recommend checking out our event calendar for a full line-up. This time of year is packed with events, and we're working hard to make sure our calendar is saturated with all of the best!

Now let's check out what fall fun is on tap for this weekend!

Space Center Houston: An Out of This World Experience for Kids

Houston, H-Town, Bayou City, Clutch City... we can all agree that Houston is known by many names. The one we're talking about today, however, is arguably one of the coolest - Space City. The name officially made its debut in 1967 when NASA built the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, and it's stuck ever since. In addition to the famous Johnson Space Center, we now also have the visitor center to JSC which is known as Space Center Houston. It's full of interative ehxhibits and activities for families and kids!

This weekend is packed with so many awesome events, narrowing them down to just a few to feature became a monumental task. And that, friends, is a great problem to have! Some noteworthy events: the Earth Science Day Family Festival at HMNS, KBR Kids Day at Guadalupe Park, and Houston Grand Opera's Opera to Go! performance of Strega Nona.

We also have been rockin' and rollin' behind the scenes getting ready for all the fall festivities, and are proud to share some amazing resources with you, starting with our Fall Fun and Harvest Guide that we are confident will quickly become your go-to resource for all the fall-inspired events. The annual PumpkinFest at Cornelius Nursery offers families a day of fun, free, fall-inspired activities. Photo courtesy of Cornelius Garden Center & Nursery.

Can we all say a little hooray for the (slightly) cooler weather we've been enjoying? Even a marginal break in the heat means that outdoor activities are infinitely more enjoyable, which is why we think now is the perfect time to take the kids to the Renaissance Festival, which is kicking off this weekend! We also highly recommend going on a family camping trip... OR you could even combine the two and camp at RenFest. Let's celebrate the change in seasons with all the outdoor activities!

Speaking of activities, there are no shortage of amazing events happening this weekend. Some highlights include the 40th Annual Festival Chicano, Stargazing with Houston Astronomical Society, and the Fort Bend County Fair. It's guaranteed to be a good weekend no matter what you pick, that's for sure!

If you have an event or activity coming up that you want to share, we want to share it too! Submit your event to our event calendar and we'll add it to our ever-growing list of awesome happenings around town. The start of a new month also means we have a brand new October GoList up, so be sure to stop by and check out some of the best events that are going on throughout the month so you can plan out your weekends with the kids and GO!

We also recommend signing up for our weekly newsletter so you can stay up to speed with everything happening on Mommy Poppins.
