Swimming Lessons for Kids in Houston: The Best Swimming Classes in Town

Submitted by Rachael Cherry on Sun, 08/07/2022 - 3:44pm

The Bayou City is known for its scorching summer weather—and that summer lasts for basically 3/4 of the year—so our kids spend a lot of time in the water. Whether it's at the pool, a splash pad, water park, or the ocean, Houston kids need to learn how to swim and execute proper water safety.

There are plenty of places that offer year-round swim lessons or swimming classes that get kids comfortable and confident in the water; we've rounded up ten of the most popular swim schools in the Houston area. And once your kids are swimming safely, be sure to check out our comprehensive camp guide and full directory of camp listings to set up a great summer!

End of Summer Bucket List: 14 Things to Do in Houston Before School Starts

Submitted by Rachael Cherry on Fri, 08/05/2022 - 10:36pm

Summer is quickly drawing to a close, so it's time to squeeze in as much seasonal fun as you can before the back-to-school grind begins. My oldest is starting his last year of preschool in the fall (cue the tears), and in an effort to make sure we have as much fun together as possible before he starts his last year as a toddler (can I still call him a toddler? Please say yes!), I've started compiling a summer bucket list of activities and events that we can do to take advantage of our fleeting time together. If you're in a similar situation - or you just need to keep the kids occupied and out of the house for a few days a week - this summer bucket list is exactly what you need because most of these things to do in Houston won't be available in the fall!

Want even more things to do in Houston this summer? Then be sure to check out our summer fun guide for Houston kids.

Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Houston: Where Kids Can Play While Parents Eat

Submitted by Rachael Cherry on Sun, 07/17/2022 - 11:06am

Relaxing on the patio with good food and drinks is something that, prior to kids, we used to love to do... and then we had kids, and going out to eat got nixed from our weekend plans. All seemed lost, and we resigned ourselves to spending our evenings out at Chick-fil-A, until we found these awesome kid-friendly Houston restaurants with play spaces for kids.

Talk about a game changer—it's like these restaurants knew that we parents needed a space to unwind a bit with the kids in tow, and they deliver with patios that open up to enclosed playgrounds, sand pits (ok, this one is a catch-22 because of sand everywhere), and toys. For more ideas on where to eat around the city, visit our Houston Restaurant Guide for families.

There are things to do on Father's Day in Houston for any dad. Photo courtesy of Katie E., Pexels

All dads are different - but regardless of whether the dad in your family is a stay-at-home carer or heads out to work, likes to play ball or prefers video games - he is easily one of the hardest people to shop for. Dad is a superhero in his own right, and with Father's Day right around the corner, it's time to start brainstorming ideas to let Dad know just how much we appreciate him. This Father's Day, we recommend giving Dad the gift of a fun experience and quality time.

Whether the dad in your life is active or into the arts, loves to travel or would rather stay closer to home, we've got you covered with our top 20 Father's Day events spanning all of Houston - from Kemah to The Woodlands and back. Drive-In Movie Theaters In and Around Houston for Outdoor Movie Nights with Kids

Submitted by Rachael Cherry on Fri, 05/13/2022 - 11:30am

While movie theaters will likely always be a mainstay in the fun activities department, Covid put a unique spin on the traditional cinematic experience by offering the drive-in movie theater a chance to shine again. Drive-in movies offer all the fun of a traditional movie experience with a retro twist; tickets are cheaper and often by the carload, some venues allow you to pop your own popcorn and bring your own snacks, and you get to enjoy a contactless cinematic experience. No more sitting behind loud patrons or being distracted by someone with their cell phone out.  It's no wonder these screenings in the Houston area are selling out at record pace!

The drive-in movie theaters listed below are all confirmed open as of the publication date and offering a slew of movie screenings on a near daily basis. As other theaters reopen and pop-up drive-ins are added, we will add them to this list.

Camping in Houston: Best Campgrounds in Texas for Families

My family is a camping family. We also are a family that loves to book our weekends full of things to do, whether that's taking advantage of activities around Houston or traveling elsewhere. As our family has grown, we've gone from tent camping in Houston to trailer camping to RVs and tried out everything else possible in between. Camping in Texas is great fun, and we love finding new campgrounds to explore, especially campgrounds near Houston that we can easily get to after work on a Friday. Families can enjoy Texas State Park camping, Texas National Forest camping, and visiting private campgrounds.
