There's nothing like the smell of a freshly cut pine tree and the ambiance it creates once its decorated for Christmas. It's no wonder this holiday season Atlanta families seem to favor live trees over their plastic counterparts to brighten their holiday tradition.

Most Atlanta-area tree farms offer an unforgettable experience for families, with knowledgable and helpful staffs who aid in cutting, prepping and hauling the trees. The atmosphere is not to be missed: A visit to a live tree farm offers the perfect photo opportunity for your newfound or recurring family holiday tradition.

We've rounded up eight cut-your-own Christmas tree farms a fairly close drive from the metro Atlanta area. So make a day of it and venture out to the farm to find the perfect holiday tree. Afterward, take a drive and glimspe some of these great holiday light shows.

This family-friendly farm continues its tradition of offering more than 4,000 trees to choose from with an atmosphere complete with s'mores, hot apple cider, hayrides, and even a photo-op with Santa Claus himself.

Hunter's Christmas Tree Farm

This family-friendly farm offers a variety of cypress and fir trees with complimentary hot chocolate and hayrides through the farm.

Minter's Farm

Inman

Minter's is the largest Christmas tree farm in the area with more than 1,500 trees including cypresses, pines, and Carolina sapphires for sale. The farm offers free hayrides on the weekends.

Roam the woods to find the perfect tree at Rex Tree Farm.

This farm offers festive wreaths as well as 10 acres of varied pines, cypresses, cedars and green giants. Farm hands will assist with cutting, shaking, and prepping trees for hauling away.

Sleepy Hollow Farm

This farm has seasonal activities year-round focusing on activities for children, including hayrides and concessions. Upon entering, customers receive a saw to cut their own trees. Tree varieties include cypresses, Carolina sapphires and blue ice.

Stockbridge

This family-friendly farm an hour south of Atlanta offers a variety of cut-and-carry trees and welcomes guests to its unique gift shop, where they can sip complimentary hot chocolate and browse unique handmade crafts.

Thompson's Tree Farm

Lawrenceville

This farm offers a variety of choose-and-cut trees, including Cypress varietals and Carolina sapphire. Concessions are limited, but the farm welcomes families to feed bread to their highly appreciative goats and cows.

Yule Forest

Stockbridge

This farm a half-hour south of Atlanta offers choice of cypresses, firs and spruces. Staff and attendants are on hand to help cut, shake, and bail the perfect tree and load into your vehicle. The farm offers a festive atmosphere with fresh, hot apple cider.
