Best Things to Do in Houston August 2023 with Kids

Submitted by Rachael Cherry on Sun, 07/30/2023 - 8:03am

Looking for things to do this August in Houston? Here are some great things to do in Houston with kids.

Back to school is on the horizon, but there are still some awesome summer events happening this month! To beat the heat, play outside in the evening at Park after Dark at Discovery Green, or head inside the Children’s Museum to meet Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo at the Ninja Turtles Turmoil. Later in the month, we highly recommend heading to Galveston for the annual AIA Sandcastle Contest; the sandcastles the artists create are out of this world and definitely a sight to be seen in person! And lastly, Kidz Bop is coming to Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land at the end of the month and is sure to get the kids hyped up with catchy music and dance moves.

Find more top August fun in our Ultimate Summer Fun Guide for Houston Kids. Plus, now is the time to get in a few more trips to our favorite splash pads and sprinkler parks before they close for the season.

We’re adding more events to our family activity calendar every day, so don’t forget to check it frequently.

Get ready for fireworks and festivities! July 2023 in Houston brings the 4th of July, outdoor concerts, and summer festivals galore.

The big event of July is celebrating our country's freedom, and we can't wait to head downtown for Shell's Freedom Over Texas annual event for lots of fireworks and family fun. A trip to the island is also in order this month for another round of Galveston's Family Beach Challenge, where there's a full day of obstacles and life-sized games. After, we recommend sticking around and checking out all that Galveston has to offer. Finally, if your kids are obsessed with Bluey, seeing Bluey’s Big Play at the Wortham Center is an absolute must.

Did we mention we’re running weekly giveaways all summer long? Each weekly entry also counts as an extra entry into our Ultimate Summer Giveaway, an all-included trip to Nick Resort Punta Cana! Find out how to enter on our Facebook or Instagram pages.

It feels like we're all searching for new ways to keep cool in Houston right now, and it's still only June. Staying cool during a heat wave with the kids is top priority these days, and while Houston has plenty of splash pads and pools, sometimes it's nice to beat the heat while enjoying someone else's air conditioning. Even though we love them, we know it can get expensive at indoor playgrounds and gyms, so we've included an entire section of free indoor fun ideas to help you beat the heat without breaking the bank. And if you don't mind dishing out some dollars for fun indoor experiences, the second half of this list includes our favorite paid entry Houston-area venues where you can escape the heat this summer.

Find yourself in need of even more ideas? Be sure to check out our guide to free summer fun and full guide of things to do with Houston kids in the summer.

Fourth of July fireworks displays in Houston are one of the biggest hits of the summer, and this year we have a long list of places you can see them. Live music, 4th of July parades, and fireworks are all coming together to make this year's 4th of July in Houston spectacular.

There are several mega 4th of July fireworks displays happening near Houston, including those at CityCentre, in Galveston, and beyond, but there are also more low-key Fourth of July celebrations that might be better for the younger kids. Either way, it appears clear that Bayou City is ready to indulge in a little Independence Day celebration in 2023. Read on for our top picks for July 4th fireworks in Houston and the suburbs, and find more fun things to do this holiday weekend in our Summer Fun Guide for Houston Kids.

Looking for the best things to do in Houston this Father's Day weekend 2023? Here are some family-friendly events and activities to add to your list for this weekend.

This weekend is a big one as we celebrate both Father's Day and Juneteenth. Celebrate Dad at Sugar Land Town Square all weekend long with their Day of the Dad event that features two nights of concerts, or head to The Woodlands Children's Museum for Magical Dad's Day. In honor of Juneteenth, we recommend the Juneteenth Celebration at The Children's Museum of Houston or making a trip to Galveston Island for the Juneteenth Parade & Picnic.

Unsure how to explain Juneteenth to your kids? We put together a whole post on the topic of Juneteenth to help you have an open, positive conversation about this historic event.

Did we mention we’re running weekly giveaways all summer long? This week we’re giving away a Mommy Poppins beach tote, plus each entry also counts as an extra entry into our Ultimate Summer Giveaway, an all-included trip to Nick Resort Punta Cana! Find out how to enter on our Facebook and Instagram pages!

Splash pads in Houston are there for you through the first heat wave of summer all the way until "fake fall." Splash pads and spray grounds are crucial ways to keep kids cool without locking them indoors, and perfect for families who might not be able to wrangle several small children in a pool just yet.

The free splash pads below are our favorites, making it easy to find your newest summer chill spot.

Be sure to check out these amusement parks, theme parks, and water parks within driving distance of Houston, and our Ultimate Houston Kids Summer Vacation Guide for more things to do in Houston all summer long.
