Submitted by Clementina Verge on Tue, 02/23/2016 - 5:51am

During the summer months your child may crave more freedom, more opportunity for creativity, and more time outdoors. If so, the adventures below might be perfect for them. Here are a few summer camps in the Hartford area that focus on art, pottery, and farm life. This will allow young minds to take a break from formulas and to get their hands dirty with paint, clay, or soil. At the end of the summer, they'll be left with beautiful memories, and maybe even a few beautiful works of art.

Affordable Preschools in the Hartford Area

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Mon, 02/08/2016 - 9:26am

Many childhood experts agree that attending a high-quality preschool is important in helping children to prepare for kindergarten and beyond. In such a setting, little ones begin to understand structure, how to wait their turn and work in a team, and lay a strong academic foundation that includes richer vocabularies and stronger basic match skills. But such an experience should not cost as much as college tuition. In the Hartford area, there are many preschools that offer an enriching curriculum at a more affordable price. Here are a few names to help start your search for the perfect fit for your child:

Astronomy, Robotics and Science Summer Day Camps in the Hartford Area

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Thu, 01/28/2016 - 9:36pm

For many of us, childhood was filled with curious outdoor exploration, making mud pies, trying to catch tadpoles from nearby ponds, and spending hours trekking through woods in our neighborhoods. These are amazing memories that will last us a lifetime. Help your own child enjoy a summer of learning and discovery by registering them in a science-themed summer camp in the Hartford area.

A Sweet Visit to PEZ Visitor Center in Orange

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 11:45am

Strawberry candy-scented air tickled our noses as soon as we opened the car doors, and before we even stepped into the building, the kids knew that the PEZ Visitor Center would be a sugary dream come true (for another sweet experience in the New Haven area, venture out to Fascia's Chocolates in Waterbury). For adults who loved PEZ candy during childhood, it’s a trip down nostalgia lane. For children, it’s a colorful world filled with tempting flavors of candy. Though a visit here doesn’t take long (we spent about an hour), you’ll be glad you stopped by, and the kids will not want to leave.

MLK Weekend Fun: History, Ice Fishing, Theater, and More

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 4:00pm

It’s the middle of January and the nearly snowless winter continues, making some of us a bit unhappy. But not to worry – even without sledding or outdoor ice skating, there’s plenty to cheer us up. This weekend, your family can put on dancing shoes and enjoy Free Dance Classes, or, to keep up with the musical theme, dance in your seat during a reggae children’s musical production of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds.

The historically-minded can enjoy a free visit to the Yale Peabody Museum for its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Legacy of Environmental and Social Justice event. A special theatrical performance, the “Struggle for Freedom: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr.,” will take place at Silas Bronson Library in Waterbury, and a free showing of "Our Friend Martin", an animated adventure inspired by Dr. King, will entertain children at the Stanley-Whitman House in Farmington.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2016 Celebrations are taking place across the state, so be sure to check our Events Calendar. To keep up with the latest family-friendly events and activities, be sure to also sign up for our newsletters, and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Horseback Riding Lessons and Camps in Hartford County

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sun, 01/10/2016 - 7:00am

Before we know it, another school year will end, and children and parents alike will seek activities to fill their summer days. The Hartford area is home to many attractions, playgrounds, and museums, but sometimes, none of those will quench a child’s thirst like a gallop on a horse. Yes, a horse! Fortunately, just like in Fairfield County, there are plenty of Hartford County farms and stables that cater specifically to young riders, offering lessons for all skill levels and also summer riding camps.

New Year's Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Art, Ice Skating, Birds, and a Frozen Party, January 2-3

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 12/30/2015 - 12:26pm

Welcome to a new year! The Mommy Poppins Connecticut team wishes you and your family a healthy and happy 2016. We hope that our posts and Events Calendar will provide you with many ideas for enjoying the upcoming months to the fullest, beginning with the January Go List.

If you’re still recovering from festivities, you can take it easy this weekend, which appears to be pretty quiet throughout the state. It’s the last chance this season to stroll through the Fantasy of Lights in New Haven, or the Festival of Silver Lights in Meriden. You can also relax at Maritime Aquarium with a viewing of The Polar Express, showing for the last time this weekend.
