If your budding thespians or tiny dancers want to continue (or discover!) their stage presence through the summer, you'll be happy to know that a variety of summer camps in the Hartford area are geared toward performing arts. These venues provide a great way to channel creative energy and spend the summer doing what children enjoy. Check out this list of camps with a fine arts focus, including drama, dance, theater, and music.

A Visit to Lutz Children's Museum in Manchester

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Thu, 12/17/2015 - 1:29am

The Lutz Children’s Museum, located about 10 miles east of Hartford, is one of those cozy little places perfect for spending a few hours engaged in play and hands-on learning. Given its close proximity to Wickham Park (only a 10-minute ride), if you're visiting between April and December, you can easily turn a visit here into a day trip to Manchester.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Fancy Nancy, Trains, and Gingerbread, December 19-20

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 12/16/2015 - 4:21pm

It’s hard to believe that in less than two weeks we mark the end of 2015. While most people are still busy shopping for the latest gadgets or best toys, it’s important to remember that time is the most precious present we give our children. It can’t be wrapped in pretty paper, but it outlasts all other gifts, so before another year passes us by, take the time to make a few more memories.

This weekend, you can enjoy Breakfast with Frosty at Beardsley Zoo (and visit its newest resident, a red panda!), remind yourself why It’s A Wonderful Life, and end the day with the Fantasy of Lights display at Lighthouse Point Park. More light shows are brightening up Fairfield County and the Hartford area.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Lights, Chocolate, Basketball, and Theater December 5-6

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 12/02/2015 - 3:00pm

December nights are made for dazzling lights, and plenty of them are twinkling across the state. An annual tradition in the New Haven area is the Fantasy of Lights at Lighthouse Point Park. Drive through a mile-long display featuring dancing bears, penguins, dragons, turtles, ducks, and so much more. Not only will you enjoy the show, but your admission fee will benefit charity. If you’re not close to the shoreline, check out the (free!) Festival of Silver Lights in Meriden, Holiday Light Fantasia in Hartford, or The Christmas House in Torrington.

A Visit to the Connecticut River Museum in Essex

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sat, 11/28/2015 - 9:11am

In Eastern Connecticut, on the edge of the Connecticut River, a small unassuming building holds many archeological treasures, history lessons, nautical artwork, and a full-sized replica of the first American submarine. The 22nd Annual Train Show is a special seasonal attraction for visitors of all ages, and only a few minutes away, a ride on the North Pole Express awaits at the Essex Steam Train Station.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Cars, Games, Balloons, and Theater, November 21-22

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 11/18/2015 - 4:33pm

Remember that 2015 Connecticut Hiking Challenge you promised the kids you'd complete? The deadline is less than a month away, and with mild weather still upon us, the outdoors are a beautiful place to be. If you'd rather win medals than a medallion, lace up your sneakers and head to the Hot Coco 5K and Kids Fun Run in Cheshire or Run for the Turkeys in New Fairfield. Or, if you'd rather win a turkey, sign up for a free and friendly basketball competition in Bristol.

Visiting Hartford's New Britain Youth Museum with Kids

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Mon, 11/16/2015 - 9:58pm

On a recent rainy day, while looking for something new to do, my daughters and I stumbled upon the New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park. I admit that when I first pulled into the parking lot I was doubtful, but inside, my girls discovered a new favorite place in the Hartford area. The museum is small in size, but big in charm. You will not find flashy exhibits and high-tech gadgets, but young children will enjoy the creative play areas, the compact nature center, and the farmyard.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Gemstones, Parades, and a Samurai Box, November 7-8

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 11/04/2015 - 5:24pm

Welcome to November! Time for cozy sweaters, frolicking in crunchy leaves, and roasting marshmallows in outdoor fire pits. If you enjoy the increasingly longer evenings and relish in cuddling with good stories, you will enjoy scouring the book sales happening this weekend at libraries in Ansonia, Southbury, and Farmington (it's never too early to stock up for snowy days!).

November is National American Heritage Month, so consider a visit to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, which is hosting the Honoring the Veterans Powwow on Saturday and closing for the season at the end of the month. You might also enjoy visiting The Institute for American Indian Studies where older children can learn how to build a fire using only what nature provides.
