Nutcracker Ballet Performances in Connecticut

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sun, 11/01/2015 - 9:23am

Sugar plum fairies, gingerbread men, dance of the snowflakes, and the waltz of flowers– ‘tis the season for the Nutcracker Ballet, a family-friendly classic beloved by all ages. Check out one of the many Nutcracker performances taking place across the state and let Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music fill your heart with joy while imaginative costumes and mesmerizing choreographies delight your imagination. Of course, tutus and fairies are not for everyone, so Mommy Poppins also has you covered for Holiday Shows in Connecticut That Aren't The Nutcracker, such as Elf The Musical Jr., Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, and A Christmas Carol.

A Visit to the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sun, 11/01/2015 - 5:29am

At least one Saturday morning a month, you’ll find my family perusing art galleries and museums. We find the experience equally relaxing and energizing, and my daughters get excited about finding a new favorite artwork or inspiration for a new project. Recently, we took our first trip to the Lyman Allyn Art Museum and spent a lovely day in New London.

Math Help Resources for Kids in the Hartford Area

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Sun, 09/06/2015 - 8:00am

Acute angles and interceptors, vertex and trapezoids, being a kid isn’t easy! Many children do not get excited about math, and some outright dread the subject because they find it difficult. Thankfully, the Hartford area offers plenty of options for securing additional help.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Fairs, Fairies, Mazes, and Hot Air Balloons August 29-30

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 08/26/2015 - 5:49pm

This is it. The opportunity for one more August weekend hurrah. With only a couple of days left before the onset of early bedtimes and hectic morning routines, it's important to make the most of the last days of summer. Maybe you're heading to the beach one more time, or looking to explore an outdoor museum. If you're seeking a sweet experience, consider touring Fascia's Chocolates or scouring the menu at an old-fashioned ice cream parlor.

Fun Things to Do With Kids in Cheshire, Connecticut

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Fri, 07/31/2015 - 6:44am

Located on the northeast edge of New Haven County, Cheshire has twice been named by Money magazine as one of "100 Best Places to Live", and for good reason. Packed in an area of 33 square miles, you will find charming neighborhoods filled with tree-lined streets, history, art, culture, playgrounds, delicious places to eat, Connecticut's tallest single drop waterfall, and one awesome cartoon museum. Whether you choose to spend a day in town, or just a few hours, there is plenty to do here.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Sunflowers, Cars, Carnivals and Sailing August 1-2

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 07/29/2015 - 7:00pm

It’s August! With days getting shorter and less than a month to go before most students return to school, it’s tempting to feel sorry for ourselves and denounce the fleeting summer season. But summer isn’t quite over. In fact, there’s still much to look forward to: vegetables and fruits abound, sunflowers are aglow, and plenty of beach days remain.

Fun Things to Do With Kids in Storrs, Connecticut

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 07/22/2015 - 8:00am

Though it is home to Connecticut’s flagship university, Storrs is a fun village not only for college students. Located about a half an hour east of Hartford, plenty of local attractions here (and in the town of Mansfield) will entertain, educate, and relax even the youngest visitors. So spend some time driving over its bucolic hills, exploring its trails, shopping its quaint stores, or enjoying a movie at one of the last remaining drive-in theaters in the state.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Circus, Fairies, Art, and Blueberries July 18-19

Submitted by Clementina Verge on Wed, 07/15/2015 - 7:00pm

This weekend promises to be hugely delicious and refreshing: Sunday is National Ice Cream Day! Whether you decide to track down tempting ice cream parlors (we sampled a few for you in Fairfield and New Haven counties), or make your own frozen treats at home, be sure to celebrate the sweet occasion.

If you find yourself savoring ice cream in the Hartford area, consider ending the night with free music and a movie at The Shoppes of Farmington Valley. You can also enjoy a movie or a concert in Fairfield County, or sign up the kids for a cooking class at Williams Sonoma (various locations). My family is contemplating a guided hike at Ansonia Nature Center, and, of course, finding a local ice cream shoppe.

Check the Mommy Poppins calendar to see what else is happening this weekend (and beyond!). For the latest and best family-friendly events, subscribe to our weekly newsletters and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest.
