CAMP Store and Play Space Opens in Downtown Brooklyn

Brooklyn parents just got a cool new indoor play space, right in time for the long winter months ahead. CAMP, one of our favorite toy stores in NYC (and one of our favorite places where kids can play for free), opened its newest outpost at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn this week.

Take a few steps inside, and you'll quickly realize you're not in an average toy store. A seemingly ordinary wall displaying jars of candy swings opens to reveal a world of interactive fun that is sure to be a hit with children all ages. I stopped by with my kids the other day to check out the new space: Read on for a peek inside.

Other than the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, is there really anything else to do in New York City on Thursday, November 28? You bet! We found fun ways to spend Thanksgiving Day in NYC with kids that don't involve eating turkey or watching giant balloons. Many of these events are FREE, and some of them occur only this year. Some, like the public art exhibit City in the Grass are both free and here only in 2019.

Read on for our picks, from zoos to bowling alleys to movies, plus two brilliant festivals of light at the Luminocity Festival on Randall's Island and the Winter Lantern Festival on Staten Island. Got a car? Loads of events right outside New York City are open on Thanksgiving. See our guide to 10 picture-perfect holiday day-trips near NYC. In town for the whole holiday weekend? Here are 22 fun things to do in NYC over Thanksgiving break.

And finally, a very Happy Thanksgiving to your family from everyone at Mommy Poppins NYC. Here's to a festive holiday season.

For more events happening over Thanksgiving weekend, check out our Event Calendar and November GoList.

Best Día de los Muertos and Day of the Dead Celebrations for NYC Kids

Although Halloween and the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, happen in close proximity to each other and share some similarities—including costumes, skeletons, and treats—they differ in many ways. An opportunity for families to honor ancestors and loved ones who have passed away, Día de los Muertos is a celebratory tradition that dates back thousands of years in many Latin American cultures. Though the holiday officially takes place on November 1 and 2 to coincide with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, the (mostly FREE) Day of the Dead events in NYC are spread throughout October and early November.

At Day of the Dead celebrations, revelers honor friends and family members who have died by building altars, or ofrendas, and adorning them with colorful paper flowers, beautifully decorated skeletons, and candles. It's a joyful way to involve all ages in honoring and remembering the deceased.

We've rounded up ten Day of the Dead events where NYC kids and families can celebrate the holiday. You'll find more all activities in our Fall Fun Guide, and be sure to check out our Halloween Guide for all the other spooky, kid-friendly happenings in NYC this month.

If you’re looking for a unique indoor experience for your kids on a chilly or rainy day, head to the new CAMP store in Brooklyn, scheduled to open on December 1 2019. Unlike many other indoor play spaces in NYC, CAMP is a network of stores with rotating themed experiences. CAMP at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn will boast all of the same imaginative fun as the original Fifth Avenue location, including a cafe, a theater, interactive play stations, and of course, a super-cool toy store.

With a little one who gets tired after one or two blocks of trick-or-treating, I find myself hunting for Halloween events that are more geared towards his age group. Luckily for us, NYC boasts plenty of less spooky, pre-bedtime events for the littlest ghouls and goblins.

With that in mind, we've put together a list of 14 Halloween events perfect for the preschool set, many of them FREE. Enjoy these gentle Halloween events while you can—your kids will be celebrating at the Village Halloween Parade before you know it.

Find even more festive happenings for all age groups in our Halloween guide (including kid-friendly costume parades around the city), and of course in our events calendar, which is continually updated with new, fun events as we find out about them.
