Celebrating Dr. Seuss with Book Events for Philly Kids

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Mon, 02/20/2017 - 10:00am

In classrooms throughout Philadelphia, children participate in Read Across America Day, an initiative that was started to instill and promote a love for reading. Every year, this event is held on March 2nd, the birthday of beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss.

Libraries, museums, and bookstores also spend time celebrating the delightfully zany books written by this great author. Books such as Green Eggs and  Ham, The Cat in the Hat, Hop on Pop, and my particular favorite, Oh, The Places You'll Go are held near and dear to many children and grown-ups alike. Certain venues throughout the area feature engaging and educational activities and even special guest appearances! We have rounded up some local events Philly families can enjoy together.

Philly kids may have an extra day off from school. But, this day off means more than just 'no homework.' Recognize Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with one of the many opportunities that celebrate his legacy found in our events calendar. Museums throughout the area host family activities such as service opportunities, arts and crafts, and other unique experiences that commemorate Dr. King's life. If you don't have the day off but are looking for care for your child, be sure to check out our roundup of School Day Off Camps.

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 10:00am

Shopping for the perfect gift can be one of the most dreaded tasks to accomplish over the winter holidays, especially with the kids in tow. It doesn't have to be though. We've rounded up some of the top craft fairs, holiday markets, Christmas bazaars, and pop-up shops in the area. Some are only one day events while others are weeks long. In addition, many of these locations have activities to keep the kids occupied. An added bonus is that these venues feature one of a kind gifts, the kind you can't find at the mall. And, if you have some 'difficult to please' individuals on your shopping list like me, this gives you the chance to wow them with a great holiday find. Happy shopping!
