Weekend Fun for Philly Kids Jan 10/11: Outdoor and Indoor Winter Fun

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Thu, 01/08/2015 - 1:00am

As the cold winter air migrates to Philadelphia, some automatically seek indoor activities while others are ready to embrace the chilly weather and get outside.

No matter what appeals to your family, the Mommy Poppins event calendar has plenty of options to entertain the kids.

Experience wintertime nature by bundling up and taking part in outdoor activities. Wake up early to participate in the Conservancy Cottage's Bird Count, stay up late for a Family Night Hike at Tyler Arboretum or learn what vegetation animals depend upon during the winter at Linvilla Orchards' Gardening with Children workshop.

If inside fun is more your speed, visit a museum. Please Touch Museum hosts the Ugandan Kid's Choir, Delaware Museum of Natural History offers its interactive story time called Book in the Nook and Penn Museum teaches kids about Egyptian jewelry at its Family Workshop.

Indoors or outdoors, much fun awaits you this weekend. Below are some highlights from the Mommy Poppins events calendar.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids December 27/28: All-Star Days, Dino Days and Winter Break Fun

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Wed, 12/24/2014 - 8:00am

Winter break is here. Kids are home from school, moms and dads have taken time off from work, and, finally, families have a chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor and savor the holiday.

However, if your vision of Christmas break has nothing to do with sugar plums and more to do with the anxiety of how to keep the kids entertained, fear not! The Mommy Poppins calendar has plenty to keep everyone happy.

Nestle down by the fire with a good book, add some last minute decorations to the tree or take a family day trip. Visit Dino Days at Wilmington's Delaware Natural History Museum or All-Star Days at Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences. See The Media Theatre's Annie Jr. or Hedgerow Theatre's  A Christmas Carol as they both close this weekend. View the beautiful lights at Fonthill's Candlelight Castle Tour. Or perhaps you are ready to ring in 2015 and want to make New Year's Eve plans?

No matter how you chose to spend the first weekend of winter break, Mommy Poppins wishes you a very Happy Holiday!

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids Dec 20/21: Holiday Shows, Santa Sightings and Hanukkah Celebrations

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Thu, 12/18/2014 - 8:00am

With Hanukkah underway and Christmas almost here, many families are asking, "Have we finished our holiday bucket list?" With so many events from which to select, Mommy Poppins has narrowed down some "not to miss" activities to celebrate the holiday season.

This weekend marks the last days for Santa Express in Wilmington, Kitchen Kettle Village's Holly Days in Intercourse and Santa Saturdays at Philadelphia's Franklin Square. Breakfast with Santa events at Hard Rock Cafe in Philadelphia, Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown and Springfield Country Club in Delaware County conclude this weekend as well.

If your family wants to see a show this holiday season, there is still time. Murray the Elf is featured at Act II Playhouse, the Shooting Stars Holiday Show is on stage at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center and the Glazier Jewish Center hosts 8th Day Live in Concert and Menorah Lighting.

So, grab a pencil and be ready to scratch those fun-filled events off your holiday bucket list and make memories for years to come.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids December 13/14: Ugly Sweaters, Seaport Parade of Lights and Santafest

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Thu, 12/11/2014 - 8:00am

It's the most wonderful time of the year... or so the song goes. Some may feel stressed through the holidays. Others look forward to December with great anticipation. Either way, the Mommy Poppins calendar has something for everyone.

Put on your ugliest Christmas sweater and run off holiday tension at the Ugly Sweater 5K at Fairmount Park. Be still and star gaze at the Delaware Museum of Natural History or enjoy the peacefulness of the Holiday Luminaria at Lock 60.

Or, if your family has been stoked for the holidays for months, has already seen The Nutcracker twice, put the tree up weeks ago and is looking for a twist to the traditional holiday fun, consider watching a boat parade, see Santa arrive helicopter style or take a lunch cruise with Santa himself. No matter what you chose, enjoy the holiday as there are only two weeks left.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids Dec 6/7: Zoo Noel, Latkepalooza and Lucia Fest

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Thu, 12/04/2014 - 8:00am

It's the first full weekend in December and the holidays are in full swing. Predictably, houses are decorated with twinkling lights, Christmas music seems to be on every radio station and children are on their best behavior as Santa's elves are ready to send reports back to the North Pole.

Just as predictable, many families partake in holiday rituals like cutting down the Christmas tree or eating Brunch with Santa. Perhaps this year, consider incorporating a new tradition. Go to a holiday parade, see a Live Nativity, attend the Dickens Festival, sample potato pancakes at Latkepalooza or watch reenactors at the Washington Crossing the Delaware Dress Rehearsal.

Traditions make the holiday feel special but trying something new can be exciting and fun... and could even help create a new tradition making memories for years to come.

For a complete list of things to do, see the Mommy Poppins Events Calendar.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids Nov 15/16: Scouts, Sales and Holiday Spirit

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Thu, 11/13/2014 - 8:00am

The holidays are upon us. Grocery stores have clearanced out fall goodies to make way for winter holiday treats. Malls are playing Christmas carols and setting up Santa's chair for young visitors. And our Mommy Poppins calendar is no different. This weekend, we notice some holiday events creeping onto our pages with many more to come!

However, there are some non-holiday events to embrace before we are immersed in the season. There are Boy Scout or Girl Scout events to help scouts earn badges. If you are looking for a bargain, check out this weekend's consignment sales. Or, channel your artsy side and make a mosaic cookie plate... just in time to leave cookies for St. Nick on Christmas Eve.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids October 18-19: Pumpkins, Hayrides, Halloween Parades and more

Submitted by Kristen Sullivan on Thu, 10/16/2014 - 5:30am

Cooler temperatures, falling leaves and front lawns spotted with pumpkins are all indications of this delightful time of year known as autumn. Another sure sign of the season is the Mommy Poppins calendar jam packed with festivals, hayrides and pumpkin patches. Just this weekend, None Such Farm in Buckingham, Linvilla Orchards in Media and Shady Brook Farms in Yardley all host their fall festivals and events.

If your kids want to try out their Halloween costumes before the "Big Day," Saturday's Skippack's Halloween Parade could be the perfect venue. Or put on those costumes and head to Philadelphia Zoo's Boo at the Zoo.

On the other hand, if you have had enough of the pumpkins, scarecrows, apples and hayrides to fill your entire treat bucket to the top, escape to one of the consignment sales going on this weekend.

We have some weekend highlights below, but be sure to browse our complete event calendar for even more family fun ideas. Sign up for our newsletter as well and have our weekly roundup delivered right to your inbox.
